Translation of picture books

Picture books are the ideal medium to acquaint children with their first language and to familiarize them with narrative and literary language.

Bilingual picture books have the advantage that when parents, animators and others tell the story, the children can hear and experience the same story in their first language as well as in the local language. At the same time, the parents also have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the local language through simple texts.

For playgroups, kindergartens or school classes with a wide range of available language resources, it is an advantage if the stories are available in as many languages as possible. The children can discover different languages and scripts. Parents, educators and older children with appropriate language skills can be involved in the narrative.

The intercultural libraries therefore translate popular picture books into languages that are usually not available in the local book market.

Interbiblio supports the member libraries in collaboration with Bibliomedia Solothurn.

A selection of translations can be downloaded here soon.

Children's rhymes and songs in many languages

Every language has developed its own rhymes and songs with which children grow up: verses for play and fun, consolation and lullabies, but also learning.

The greater part of this treasure-trove is handed down orally, many nursery rhymes are lost, while others are re-created under different influences.

In the intercultural libraries, this aspect is addressed with parent-child-oral actvities. At these events, parents bring their nursery rhymes and songs from their own language and swap them with other families.

The intercultural library JUKIBU in Basel has made a collection of some of these verses and invites everyone to listen to it:

Höre deine Sprache – Verse und Lieder zum Anklicken  (Listen to your language – click to hear nursery rhymes and songs)
